We added new functionality in the CloudStor July 2022 update to improve security around login and authentication. You can’t log in to the CloudStor desktop app using an app password or sync password anymore; instead, newer versions of the app will ask you to log in to CloudStor using a web browser and your usual institute credentials.
If you’re having trouble logging in to the CloudStor app, you might need to update the version of the app that you’re using.
CloudStor app versions 2.6.2 and earlier will display an error similar to Error returned from the server:invalid_client
.
We recommend that you upgrade to the latest version of the CloudStor app to sync your files and receive the latest bug fixes and improvements.
Note: From 8 September 2022, you won’t be able to log in using CloudStor app versions 2.9.2 and earlier.
This issue only affects users accessing CloudStor through the CloudStor desktop app, and will not impact users accessing CloudStor through their web browser or mobile app.
View your current version
- Open the CloudStor app.
- Click Settings.
- Click About.
The current version installed will be displayed.
Upgrade automatically
Newer versions of the CloudStor app can update themselves automatically. If you don’t see a message prompting you to approve the upgrade when you start the app:
- Click Settings.
- Scroll to the bottom of the Settings page.
- Under Updates, look for a message that an updated version of the app is available.
- Click Restart & Update.
The CloudStor app might ask you to log in to your CloudStor account using your browser. Use your usual CloudStor credentials – not the app password you might be used to using with the CloudStor app.
The CloudStor app will download the latest version of itself and upgrade, then restart.
Upgrade manually
If automatic updates are disabled on your machine, or your current CloudStor app version doesn’t support automatic updates, upgrade your CloudStor app by downloading the latest version and installing it manually:
- Click
Quit CloudStor in the top toolbar.
- Download the latest version from the Desktop Clients section of the CloudStor download hub.
- Install the new version of the CloudStor app in the same folder as the existing CloudStor app.
What happens if I don’t update my CloudStor app?
If you are on version 2.6.2 or lower, you won’t be able to authenticate to CloudStor. You’ll receive an Invalid Client
error when you try to log in.
On 8th of September 2022, we will be applying a minimum version restriction to 2.9.2 to prevent any further issues with the app. If you’re using a version earlier than 2.9.2 after this date, you will be unable to log in to CloudStor using it.
