What to use FileSender for
You can use FileSender to send files up to 10 TB in size. However, it’s most useful for sending large files to collaborators.
Sending a file through FileSender is useful when:
- You want to send a file to another person.
- That file is too large to send through your email account. Many email providers limit attachment sizes to around 25MB.
- You want someone to edit or add to your file and send it back to you.
- It’s important that you know who has downloaded or accessed the file and how many times it has been accessed.
- You want to encrypt the data that you share.
- You want to increase security so that the person opening the file has to enter a password to decrypt it.
The FileSender application
The FileSender application has two main parts:
- The browser interface. This is responsible for setting off file uploads and downloads, encryption, and password generation.
- The server application. This stores your files and sends invitations to people you want to share them with.
FileSender Vouchers
Vouchers allow people who don’t have a FileSender account to use FileSender to send files to you. If you have access to FileSender through your institution, you can send a voucher to another person who doesn’t. This will allow them to send files through FileSender.
Note: You don’t need to send a voucher to someone so they can download files you send; they only need a voucher to send files to you.
Send a FileSender Voucher to a non-FileSender user to allow them to send files to you through FileSender.
Data encryption
When you send a file through FileSender, you can encrypt it with end-to-end password protected AES-GCM SHA-256 encryption. This ensures that only someone who possesses the password can read the file.

File expiration
Set an expiry date for files you send, up to a maximum of 40 days. The expiry period starts when you send a file.
